Magic Moss is long stranded sphagnum moss that is usually associated with hanging baskets.
However let us teach you that moss is best used on and under the soil.
Using moss your soils will have the ability to withhold upto 20 times own weight in moisture.
|
Hanging Baskets - Lets make one
|
|

|
Place a 5cm layer of moss around the inside of the basket.
Tip: If the holes in the basket are to large place a layer of bird-netting around the outside of the basket.
|

|
Then push this moss to develop a strong layer of moss. (as shown on the left).
PLACE A PIECE OF PLASTIC INSIDE THIS IS LAYER.
THIS SHOULD BE UP THE SIDES ABOUT (5cms or 2 inchs).
A RETAIL PLASTIC BAG IS IDEAL FOR THIS.
Place a good handful of moss within this plastic.
You are making area for the water to be held within the basket, like a wee resivour.
This will save about half of your watering as the water will be held in this area and does not allow the potting mix to dry-out. This is the secret of most good baskets.
|
The Potting Mix:
Blend some Magic Moss through the potting mix, by chopping up some into 1 to 2 cm peices and mixing it into the soil.
Or if you have some of our Magic Mulch (chopped moss and seaweed), mix this through your potting mix. This will give everything an extra boost.
Either way blend some moss through the potting mix and notice the difference.
Planting of the Side of the basket:
If you are putting side plants in then place the plant through the moss layer and above your plastic layer.
This is important as the roots of the plant go into the resivour.
Place your potting mix/moss blend into the basket and plant it as you normally would.
Remember to water your basket and enjoy it.

Using Moss as a Mulch:
|
|
|
|
By placing moss about the top of plants you will retain more moisture about the plants and slow evoration from about the top layers of the surface.
This is a very good thing to do when water restrictions or on or you are concerned about water usage. Especially good about strawberries as sphagnum moss contains sphagnol, which is good for its antifungi property which does not allow strawberries to rot
when sitting on it.

Using Magic Moss as a transplanting medium.
It is both natural and New Zealand sourced.
Magic Moss is ready to use and easy to apply.
Magic Moss lasts many years under the ground and in its natural environment will finally break down to form peat.
Sphagnum moss has natural antiseptic properties and it can absorb 20 x its own weight in water.
A significant benefit in water restrictive times.
· Used in the garden, in pots and in hanging baskets.
· Can be mixed through the soil to aid water absorption.
· Used in establishing plants in dry or stony ground.
· First aid in the transplanting of trees and shrubs.
· For propagation.
· Perfect growing medium for orchid and bromeliad growing.
· Ideal for carnivorous plant care.
 |
The water retention is done by each single leaf of moss has a spore hole in it and it allows water to full it and then it releases it when required.
Because of its water-retentive qualities it conserves valuable resources and, of course, one of your most valuable assets - your time!
Plants just love it and why wouldn't they?
